Chicago Bears Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-09

Chicago Bears Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-09
Prior to last Sunday's game, the Bears announced Marty Booker as the replacement for injured Brandon Lloyd (knee) in the starting lineup.

But, when the Bears' offense took the field, the wideouts were Rashied Davis and Devin Hester, and they received most of QB Kyle Orton's passes.

Davis had career bests against the Lions with six catches and 97 receiving yards. He has 15 receptions for the season, just seven less than his career best in 2006. Hester caught five passes, tying his career best, for 66 yards and a TD.

PLAYER NOTES

--DT Tommie Harris (knee) practice on a limited basis Wednesday but is expected to play Sunday after sitting out the last two games, including last week when he was suspended.

--CB Nate Vasher (wrist) was limited at practice Wednesday, but he might need another week to rehab from his thumb surgery, which was just over a week ago.

--CB Charles Tillman (shoulder) was limited at practice Wednesday, but he'll probably play since he did so last week with the same injury and returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown.

--RB Matt Forte is fourth in the NFL with 555 yards from scrimmage.

--TE Greg Olsen's receiving yardage has increased in each of the previous three weeks. After he was held to seven yards in Week 2, Olsen had 16 yards, then 35 in Week 4, and 87 last week.

GAME PLAN: The No. 1 priority for the Bears' defense is slowing down the Falcons' No. 2 rushing attack in the NFL, which is led by Michael Turner, who has a rare combination of size (at least 244 pounds) speed and power. Turner, who is averaging 5.3 yards per carry, is complemented by Jerious Norwood, whose 6.6-yard rushing average is better than any runner in the NFL except Cowboys rookie Felix Jones.

The Bears are aware of how well rookie QB Matt Ryan has played in the Georgia Dome and that WR Roddy White is averaging 17.5 yards per catch, but that doesn't concern them nearly as much as stopping the run game.

Offensively, the Bears continue to gain confidence in QB Kyle Orton's ability to throw the ball against defenses stacked to stop their running game, but they still would like rookie RB Matt Forte to get around 25 touches a game.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Bears LT John St. Clair and RT John Tait vs. Falcons DE John Abraham - Abraham will line up in different positions to get at the quarterback. Abraham leads the NFL with seven sacks, and the Bears are ranked No. 20 at preventing sacks. QB Kyle Orton was sacked just once last week, but in the previous two games, he went down seven times.

Bears NT Dusty Dvoracek vs. Falcons RB Michael Turner: Dvoracek is second on the team with three tackles for loss and second among the defensive linemen with 16 tackles. In Turner, he'll face the NFL's leading rusher with 543 yards and six touchdowns.

INJURY IMPACT: DT Anthony Adams (ankle), LB Nick Roach (shoulder) and WR Brandon Lloyd (knee) did not practice Wednesday. DT Tommie Harris (knee), and CB's Charles Tillman (shoulder) and Nate Vasher (wrist) practiced but were limited.
