PLAYER NOTES

--SS Kevin Payne was second in tackles with 11 and has 77 for the year, just one behind team leader Lance Briggs.

--RB Kevin Jones had one carry for 0 yards, and in the past four games, he has a total of four carries for 2 yards.

--WR Devin Hester had four catches for 54 yards, including a long of 29, which was just his third reception of 20 yards or more out of 26 catches.

--CB Corey Graham remained at nickel back, even though Danieal Manning, the former No. 1 nickel, returned after missing two games with a strained hamstring.

--QB Kyle Orton is hopeful of returning to the starting lineup Sunday against the Packers after missing just one game with a sprained right ankle.

REPORT CARD VS. TITANS

PASSING OFFENSE: D -- Rex Grossman proved why he lost the training camp battle for the No. 1 job to Kyle Orton with a mediocre performance against the Titans, completing 20 of 37 passes for 173 yards with one interception and one TD pass. He failed to convert several opportunities that could have helped the Bears flip their awful field position, most notably an overthrow to a wide-open Devin Hester (four catches, 54 yards) that could have been a 67-yard TD. Grossman completed just five passes to wide receivers, as he was frequently wild high.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C-minus -- Rookie Matt Forte was effective in the first half with 64 yards on 13 carries, as the Bears did a commendable job of neutralizing Albert Haynesworth. But Forte added just 8 yards in the second half on seven attempts.

PASS DEFENSE: F -- The Bears allowed Titans QB Kerry Collins to have by far his best game of the season, completing 30 of 41 passes for 289 yards, two TDs, no interceptions and a passer rating of 108.7. Collins was sacked just once, and he was almost never hurried.

RUSH DEFENSE: A -- There was no running room for rookie Chris Johnson, who came in as the AFC rushing leader but was held to 8 yards on 14 carries. LenDale White didn't fare much better with 14 yards on 10 carries, and as a team, the Titans had just 20 yards on 29 rushes. WLB Lance Briggs (13 tackles), SS Kevin Payne (11 tackles) and FS Mike Brown (six tackles plus two tackles for loss) were instrumental in shutting down the run.

SPECIAL TEAMS: D -- P Brad Maynard's low, short punts, often from around his own goal line, didn't help the Bears' lousy field position, but he was battling a strong wind. PK Robbie Gould had a 48-yard field-goal attempt blocked, and, once again, Hester was ordinary in the return game against one of the league's weaker coverage units.

COACHING: D -- The combination of soft coverage and nonexistent pass rush is making the Bears susceptible to even a mediocre passing attack, as they proved again.
