Chicago Bears Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-05

Chicago Bears Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-05
The re-emergence of defensive tackle Tommie Harris as an impact player should make everyone on the defense better, especially his linemates, according to defensive left end Adewale Ogunleye.

Harris had two sacks vs. the Rams, as did Ogunleye, and right end Alex Brown had one.

In the first quarter Sunday night, Harris and Brown both got their fifth sack of the season, tying them for the team lead.

"I've watched Tommie the last couple games, since he's gotten back from (a team-imposed) suspension (for chronic tardiness), and he's been a different person," Ogunleye said. "He's been very active. He's causing a lot of havoc in the backfield. We're going to do better because now the focus is going to move back to Tommie, and rightfully so, and me and Alex and the guys on the edge should have a lot more fun."

Ogunleye said he's talked to Harris over the past few weeks while he was going through some difficult times, that included the suspension and poor play on the field.

"I'm one of the few guys in the locker room that can really say something to him when I think he's not doing what he needs to do," Ogunleye said. "I've talked to him just to make sure that his mind's right. He was suspended for missing a couple meetings and with that, you want to make sure that the outside factors in his life won't get in the way too much. Me being like the older guy, the older brother, I just wanted to step in and see how he's doing, and I can do that with him."

PLAYER NOTES

--DT Anthony Adams, the expected replacement for injured starter Dusty Dvoracek, who is out for the season with a ruptured biceps, missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a foot injury, but coach Lovie Smith expects him to practice Friday and play Sunday.

--FB Jason McKie (quadriceps) has not practiced this week and is not expected to play for the second straight game.

--DT Matt Toeaina, who has been inactive for each of the first 12 games, is expected to suit up Sunday with NT Dusty Dvoracek (biceps) out and DT Anthony Adams (foot) less than 100 percent.

--S/KR Danieal Manning is third in the NFL with a 28.1-yard kickoff-return average. He has taken most of the KOR reps from Devin Hester in the past three games.

--P Brad Maynard leads the NFL with 28 punts inside the 20-yard line. His net average of 37.2 yards is 18th.

--S Kevin Payne leads the Bears with four interceptions and is tied for third in the NFL among safeties.

--DE Alex Brown leads the NFL with 81/2 stuffs (a tackle of a rusher for negative yardage) according to STATS LLC.

--RB Matt Forte's 96 rushing yards (on 22 carries) last week were the most by any player this season against the Vikings.

GAME PLAN: Especially if the cold, snowy weather that hit Chicago on Tuesday and threatens to stick around is still a factor on Sunday, the Bears want to continue to rely on rookie running back Matt Forte. The ground game has been much more reliable lately than a passing attack which was extremely effective in the first half of the season but has fallen on hard times as opponents discovered that press coverage gives the Bears wide receivers fits. Still, offensive coordinator Ron Turner realizes that the Bears have to make some plays through the air. At times, Devin Hester, Brandon Lloyd and tight ends Greg Olsen and even Desmond Clark have made big plays. But none of them have done much in recent weeks, except for Hester's 65-yard catch and run for a TD vs. the Vikings last week. The thinking is that if Forte can get the attention of the Jaguars' defense early, it might help the Bears re-establish a passing game that has not accumulated more than 166 yards in any of the past five games. Defensively, the Bears have usually done an excellent job vs. the run, even against quality opposition, which they will face Sunday in Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor. But the pass defense has been so atrocious that more attention may be given to that area. Still, the Bears will focus on stopping the run first and hope that an inconsistent pass rush can put pressure on QB David Garrard with just a four-man rush. That happened vs. the Rams two weeks ago but not so much last week vs. the Vikings.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Bears LBs Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher vs. Jaguars RBs Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor -- Briggs and Urlacher spearhead a run defense that ranks sixth in the NFL. Jones-Drew and Taylor have combined for 1,055 rushing yards.

Bears DLT Tommie Harris vs. Jaguars ORG Dennis Norman: Harris has five sacks, six QB hurries and four tackles for loss in the past six games.

INJURY IMPACT: DTs Tommie Harris (rest) and Anthony Adams (foot), LBs Lance Briggs (rest) and Hunter Hillenmeyer (Achilles), S Mike Brown (rest), C Olin Kreutz (rest), FB Jason McKie (quadriceps) and DE Adewale Ogunleye (shoulder) all sat out Wednesday's practice.

All are expected to play Sunday with the exception of McKie and possibly Hillenmeyer. NT Dusty Dvoracek (ruptured biceps) has already been declared out for the remainder of the season, but he had not been placed on I.R. as of Wednesday evening.
