PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES

--CB Ricky Manning Jr., who has spent most of the past two seasons as the Bears' nickel back, appears to be on his way out. Expendable. He has been running with the second- or third-team corners.

--DB Danieal Manning, a starting safety in each of his first two seasons, has taken over the No. 1 nickel corner role.

--C Olin Kreutz opened camp on the PUP list as he recovers from a recent procedure on his injured Achilles tendon. Kreutz is not expected to be out long.

--NT Dusty Dvoracek, who won a starting job in camp last year, is on the non-football-injury list with a calf injury that the Bears say isn't serious.

--DT Anthony Adams is working exclusively with the first team while Dusty Dvoracek (calf) remains on the NFI list.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Rex Grossman vs. Kyle Orton for starting quarterback.

Saturday night under the lights at ONU's Ward Field it was Kyle Orton's day to work with the No. 1 offense, but Rex Grossman had the slightly more impressive evening, although neither of the quarterbacks lit it up.

In the two-minute drill, the last segment of the night, Grossman fired a strike to rookie Earl Bennett in a deep seam of the defense. Despite fumbling a snap late in the drive, Grossman quickly got the second team into position for a 34-yard Robbie Gould field goal. Minutes earlier, Orton completed just two of six passes in his two-minute drill, but it still ended with Gould's 43-yard field goal.

In his second seven-on-seven session, Orton went 5-for-5, connecting with five different receivers.

"I'm just trying to get better every day," Orton said. "We're installing a bunch of stuff, and it's just chopping wood every day, going through a lot of plays and trying to get as many wrinkles out as we can."

Second-year wide receiver Mike Hass had the catch of the night, leaping to snare a deep sideline bullet from Grossman and coming down with both feet barely in bounds.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Four-year veteran Rashied Davis and rookie Earl Bennett made the strongest impressions among the wide receivers who got longer looks the first four days of camp while Devin Hester wasn't on the field.

Davis caught a pair of long TD passes, one each from Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton, in the same practice. Davis, a former Arena League stud, has created a niche as an extra receiver in passing situations, primarily in the slot. He made it with the Bears in 2005 as a defensive back and kick-returner, then converted to wide receiver the next season. He has a modest 39 catches in the NFL, but he's looking to step up to another level this season. Bennett, the third-round pick from Vanderbilt, could easily have been lost in the shuffle of bodies at receiver. But in his first two days of practice, he has lived up to the praise of first-round offensive tackle Chris Williams, his teammate at Vanderbilt who claimed Bennett "catches everything."

Davis, Marty Booker, Brandon Lloyd and Mark Bradley have all gotten reps with the first team, but Bennett has still made his presence known. He had a highlight catch Thursday when he made a diving catch deep downfield of a pass from Caleb Hanie, who is battling Nick Hill for the No. 3 QB spot.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Earl Bennett. The third-round pick from Vanderbilt has made an impact in almost every practice, showing excellent hands. Although he's taking reps with the second and third teams, Bennett has already served notice that he could emerge as at least a part-time player at a position with lots of bodies.

ROOKIE REPORT: OT Chris Williams continues to sit after injuring his back in his first practice. ... RB Matt Forte is sharing first-team reps with veteran Adrian Peterson only because of protocol. Forte will be the man this year and he has showed better than expected speed and quickness. ... WR Earl Bennett has been outstanding in almost every practice, catching anything in reach. ... S Craig Steltz appears aware and active and has reaffirmed the Bears' belief that he's a down-the-road starter. ... DT Marcus Harrison is getting second-team reps. ... WR Marcus Monk is off to a slow start with a couple easy drops.

INJURY REPORT: OT Chris Williams (back) is expected back soon.
