Each week Comcast SportsNet's Dan Jiggetts and Mike North debate a hot sports topic

Today's issue: What position should the Bears target with their first-round draft pick?

Well, Dan, Jerry Angelo put the heat on Kyle Orton the other day, saying something to the effect that they have to get their quarterback situation stabilized. From his comments, it seems he has wide receiver as an afterthought.

Let me say this: Angelo has done a credible job on the defensive side, but he has completely mishandled the offense. He loved Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman, but he let Bernard Berrian go. I admit, I thought it was the right move at the time, but now I believe the Bears are a playoff team this season if Berrian is in the Blue and Orange.

Orton has won 19 games as a starter. He did it this season with an improving Devin Hester and a bunch of other wideouts who couldn't start on most NFL teams. Angelo says it starts with the quarterback. Well, where would Matt Cassel and the Patriots have been without Randy Moss and Wes Welker? Hey, Mr. Angelo, if those wideouts are on the Bears this season, you win 12 games.

That's why it's time to find the best wideout available. Don't take a defensive player with your middle-of-the-road pick. This team needs a playmaker on offense. Arizona has Larry Fitzgerald, Carolina has Steve Smith, Pittsburgh has Hines Ward and the list goes on and on. I've been looking at mock drafts and lists of college receivers, and there are some talented ones out there -- Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech (who probably will be gone), Derrick Williams of Penn State and Louis Murphy of Florida.

The Bears need to start spending more money on offense. They can't go into 2009 with the wideouts they have -- please tell me Angelo thinks the same. They drafted a heck of a tight end in Greg Olsen, and he'll only get better. Give Orton that playmaker at receiver, and they'll be able to survive games that turn into shootouts.

Who's right? Jiggetts or North? Who's right on this issue? What do you think? Vote and comment at www.suntimes.com/sports.
