CHICAGO -- A death-spiral season for the Jacksonville Jaguars took another lurching turn downward Sunday with a 23-10 loss to the Chicago Bears that unofficially signaled the time to start calculating position in the 2009 draft.
And while there are still three weeks remaining in this season, "All things are questioned when you're not having success," Coach Jack Del Rio declared.
The Jaguars (4-9) are definitely not having success. This defeat was the sixth in Jacksonville's last seven games and gave the Jaguars their first four-game losing streak since the first four games in Del Rio's first season of 2003. Other than the win over the Detroit Lions three games ago -- and the 0-13 Lions don't count -- the Jaguars have failed to reach 20 points in two months (since the Oct. 12 win at Denver, which also was the last time a Jacksonville back rushed for 100 yards).
Even with the recent run of misery, the disappointment Sunday was palpable.
Del Rio and players said they were looking forward to the cold and the elements, and the Bears (7-6) were coming off a crushing loss in Minnesota.
"We really felt like we were going to turn things around and finish the season right," quarterback David Garrard said.
Sunday was anything but. Jacksonville continued a disturbing pattern of early catastrophes. Garrard's first pass was picked off by Bears nickel back Danieal Manning, who returned the interception 42 yards to the Jacksonville 5. The interception was Garrard's sixth in his last six games, and two plays later Kyle Orton threw to tight end Desmond Clark for a touchdown and a 7-0 edge three minutes into the game.
"We're just putting too much instant pressure on our team," Garrard said.
The Jaguars had only three of their first 10 possessions last longer than three plays and only one of those produce points. Garrard threw 12 first-half passes and completed just four of those, all to running back Maurice Jones-Drew in an offensive scheme that seemed built around check-downs and second options. Garrard finished with a rating of 61.1, his second lowest of the season.
"We just didn't generate anything offensively to give ourselves a chance to win this game," Del Rio said.
Jacksonville answered the Bears' touchdown with a 42-yard Josh Scobee field goal but Robbie Gould converted kicks of 22 and 36 yards for a 13-3 Bears lead.
Orton later completed passes of 31 yards to Devin Hester and 22 yards to Greg Olsen, the latter for a TD and a 20-3 halftime lead.
"It's not that we're not practicing hard," Jones-Drew said. "It's not like we're not working hard. It's not like guys don't care. We're just not executing like we usually do."
